Beaches of Santoña and Noja
Escalante’s location makes it easy to enjoy the Cantabrian coast with very short car journeys. Just 5 km away lies Berria Beach in Santoña, a long sandy beach stretching for more than two kilometres, highly appreciated for coastal walks, scenery and surfing.
In Noja, around 7 km away, are the beaches of Trengandín and Ris, wide open beaches ideal for families and for enjoying the coastline at low tide in a spacious and peaceful natural setting.
Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park
The surroundings of Escalante form part of the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park, the most important wetland on the Cantabrian coast and one of the most valuable natural areas in northern Spain.
This landscape of estuaries, meadows and marshes is especially appreciated for birdwatching and nature photography, with thousands of migratory birds using the area throughout the year.
In the village of Escalante itself you can also visit the Cerroja Tidal Mill, a remarkable example of traditional architecture linked to the natural use of the tides and deeply connected to the local landscape.
Outdoor activities, nature and gastronomy
From Escalante you can easily access a wide range of nature activities. Quiet walking routes, hiking, travelling with your dog in Cantabria at our dog-friendly hotel, cycling routes along rural roads and water sports such as surfing, paddle surfing and kayaking are all available nearby.
